Detective Comics #27 in Apparent CGC 8.5 Sells for $130,000 on Pedigree Comics

Featuring the first appearance of the Batman and Commissioner Gordon,  Detective Comics #27 is widely regarded as the second most valuable comic book of all time. Cover dated May, 1939, Detective Comics #27 is easily one of, if not the hottest comic book on the market right now, with record sales in each grade being recorded over the past month. The Billy Wright pedigree copy CGC grade 6.5 just sold for a record $522,812 at auction on February 22nd. In that same auction, a CGC 2.0 copy sold for a record price of $116,513. Just four days later, on February 26th, a CGC 1.8 copy sold on eBay for a record $116,100.

 “According to the CGC census, only one copy out of 55 so far submitted to the CGC has graded higher than this Apparent 8.5, an extensively restored 9.2. This copy has just moderate professional restoration and has uncommon off-white to white pages, perfect centering, and incredible cover gloss (the yellow and red inks just pop off the cover). The restoration includes color touch, pieces added and tear seals. The cover was also cleaned and reinforced. It went to a buyer who collects high grade Silver Age keys and some Golden Age books. When he informed me during a routine phone conversation on Monday, March 5th that he was seriously chasing the Billy Wright 6.5 copy, I told him I had a line on the Apparent 8.5 and sent him a front and back cover scan. He was instantly enamored with this copy and after a week’s worth of negotiations, the price of $130,000 was agreed upon. On a final note, this same copy just sold at auction, in December, 2011, for $105,000, further demonstrating how hot this issue has become in 2012," said Mr. Schmell.
