Description: This comic was produced in 1996 by DC Comics, UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund), and MAC (the Mine Action Centre) to promote land mine awareness in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These comics were published in three languages: English, the Serbo-Croatian language using the Cyrillic alphabet, and the Serbo-Croatian language using the Latin alphabet. The indicia is in English in all cases. Excerpt from a New York Times article, dated October 28, 1996: "In a novel partnership between diplomacy and the entertainment industry, the United States plans to send to Bosnia this week more than half a million comic books to teach children about the dangers of land mines. The comics, using Superman as the teacher, were specially produced by DC Comics, a division of Warner Bros., and printed by the U.S. government. They will be distributed both by the NATO-led peacekeeping force and the Mine Action Center in Sarajevo. They are printed in Serbo-Croatian, in both the Latin script used by Bosnian Muslims and Croats and the Cyrillic used by Serbs. A smaller number have been produced in English. The comic books grew out of a request for help from Madeleine Albright, the chief U.S. delegate at the United Nations, to the singer Judy Collins, who is a special envoy of UNICEF, the U.N. Children's Fund. Ms. Collins used her contacts with Warner Bros. to reach DC Comics."
