I really think it's better than the 9.8. Notice how the U.S. cover says "Marvel Comics Group" across the top, and the U.K. version "Marvel All Color Comics"? That's where they changed the printing plate to make the change. All bronze age Marvel U.K. Variants have this. I was reading that they were all printed on the same presses, at the same time, and with the same inks. Only the plate was changed. Now think about this, After the entire U.S. run was printed they switch the plate to do the U.K. run. Do you think that the U.K. run was as high as the U.S.? No Sir! It's not known how many were printed, but estimates say the entire U.K. run was around 10% of the entire press run. So only 1:10 were a U.K. variant. Making them much rarer than the U.S. variant. Only the 35 Cent variants for the 30 Cent covers had an even smaller print run.

Yup and did you notice on the price varients that the star shape were the price is matches the uk pence books ?
I wonder if they printed the pence and price varients back to back before the regular run ?
and when did they stop the presses and slip in the mark jeweler inserts ?
OOO its a tangled web you have started Wizard !

The "star shape" was used on the Marvel Feature 30 cent #4 and #5 price variant books, but not the Red Sonja 35 cent price variants for #'s 4 and 5. It didn't show up until issue #12 of Red Sonja with the "Still Only" written in. That's how you would know a price increase was coming by the late bronze age. Then you would have to scrounge up another nickel for your favorite comics. They snuck it in on Red Sonja #6 raising the price to 35 cents, and you never got the "Still Only" star. Marvel Feature #6 would be 30 cents, and only the people who got the price variants for those 4 and 5's got any warning. Not if they paid, but at least they could see it coming. So basically the star shape was used to fit the words "Still Only". Once the price increase was in place they could go back to the box price. As for the inserts, they could have been printed at the same place or shipped in from anywhere. They weren't added until the books went to the bindery. Since modern books do not use newsprint they are most likely done on an offset press. The bronze books however did use newsprint, and most certainly used a web press, at least for the interiors, but the covers probably had been done on a 4 color offset press. If you take a close look at some of the high end modern "custom" collectible comics you can see the high quality that goes in to making these. Not so for our bronze age stuff. They were basically done just like a newspaper, and that's why high grade copies are so rare. Even more so for silver and golden age. Modern books are done on heavier paper with better ink, and gloss coatings. Basically they'll last forever if taken care of. Copper age and older newsprint interiors are fragile, and in time they will breakdown if not stored properly. Anyway, that star shape only meant one thing to me as a kid. I'd have to bug my Ma for some more scratch.
